Fashion is how you tell the world about who you are without saying a word!
Li Jing on the importance of fashion. Growing up in a 10x10 room with mostly hand me down clothes, I love the freedom and choices you can make to show the world who you are!

What do you do if you were fired by a company that you did great at? Ask Mickey Drexler, former CEO of the GAP who took the national clothing giant from $400 million in annual revenues to $14 billion and from 450 stores to more than 2,000 in the span of 19 years. Drexler was abruptly fired by the GAP.  His answer is: success is the best revenge. Even the firing was considered unfair and wrong by many and it was so painful that Drexler has never shopped at the GAP since, he stood up and created another legend and a GAP competitor.  Drexler became the CEO of J. Crew after being fired, he gave it a stunning makeover.  Today, it has the first family and Oprah as its fans.  This link tells you an inspiring story about a man who faced one of the greatest challenges in life.

I just came back from an amazing trip so sorry for just posting this!  The good news is 1 I got some great photos—not from the trip, just yet, but from a great shoot in the West to share with you!  2 I learned something amazing from a recent wedding to share with you. It’s from a guest of the groom and has touched many guests there!  He said: How many people should you date before you marry? There is not a right answer. You date whatever it takes until you meet THE ONE.

Isn’t it like life in general?  Whether it is your career, a life goal or your partner, you try and try and try, fail and fail and fail until you succeed.

Success is not an end, it’s a journey, a journey requiring courage. I love it!

Robert Verdi is fun and fashionable: he pulled off a suit with sneakers at the Independent Retail Week event on June 8.  So I am determined to get his fashion advice.  Robert’s answer: “The most important thing is to find the style that fits you!”  It means that you got to feel great in that style and…I would add, get some feedback from others, hopefully it’s not too outrageous. And my favorite part was when Robert suggested to take a full shot photo of us saying “since we are both fabulous and tall.”

NON GLAMOROUS WORK BEHIND THE GLAMOUR: ZANG TOI ON NBC

Putting this story out here itself was not that fabulous, it took tons of hard work and resilience due to an unforeseeable problem. We shot it a while back but couldn’t get it out, I almost gave up but decided to hang on to it because I really believe in the message in Zang’s story and not to say his AMAZING design!! I am very proud of myself and Zang for this-He is such a fun and humbling person. I love Zang’s msgs with smiley faces. Jackie Baylon, the lovely intern and friend did a good job shooting part of the video, just one day after I taught her how to pan/zoom.

What you see is glamorous, but it is not so glamorous behind the scene, you didn’t see me going to his studio for research during pouring rain on my off time, me hauling a camera and a tripod, and doing hours of editing/writing, picking 2 seconds of shot out of 2 hour tape, and yes, Zang himself fitted me and picked the dresses, we communicated about the story in middle of the night. What you see was 3 minutes behind hours of hard work.

My life is not as glamorous as you see here on the photos, waking up to work at 1 am every morning is not easy. But this is the business I love and I know I have the talent and a mission to tell these stories.  Life is full of changes and challenges, I am facing them everyday.  There will be some big changes in my life and I am excited to embrace them.  I will keep you updated. Extraordinary results require extraordinary effort!

Alexander McQueen died at 40. I couldn’t believe it when I heard it on the radio today. It’s so sad for someone to die at such a young age, especially someone with an amazing talent and career. Unconfirmed reports say it’s suicide-even more shocking and you wonder why if so? Why would someone so young with an amazing career would choose to end it once and for all?

I have long admired McQueen’s style-just like his label’s name: very queen, luxury, vibrant, free and daring!

Life is funny, you learned surprising facts about someone when they die. A perfect image is quite often created and not perfect at all. That’s why you see those “shocking” news about Tiger Woods, John Edwards and Bill Clinton.  It’s not really shocking, only the news to the public.

Being in the celebrity world and on the limelight myself, I understand how the image could be created through media, the light, camera, makeup, hair and stories true or untrue. Behind the scene, a lot of things are surprising. Everyone has struggles but people don’t like to share struggles, especially that struggle or problem is related to their image, because ultimately that’s related to income and career.

However, death is different, it’s final and no turning back or second chance. That’s why it’s sad. Maybe he could have been saved if someone talked to him, brutally honest? Asked him some hard questions? I have enormous respect for people who can do that—because it really can save lives.

I hope Alexander or by his birth first name, Lee McQueen find peace and happiness wherever he is now.   To learn more about this talented yet controversial designer, click here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_McQueen
